Hey guys!! :)))
Today I saw two very interesting videos on Youtube which inspired me to share with you what I've learned from them and my own opinions about this topics: VEGETARIANISM & VEGANISM
Before to start I would like to say that I'm not vegetarian or vegan.
I've been trying to turn vegetarian for a year even if my parents disagreed with me because they thought that I was too young to avoid meat and fish. However I started eating soy burgers, quinoa, vegan biscuits...and I really liked this kitchen because I felt much healthier and at peace with myself because I knew that I wasn't eating a dead innocent animal.
The problem was that my parents forced me to eat meat hoping that it was just a passing thing;so I promised myself that when I would have turned 18 I would have finally become a vegetarian girl....even because at that moment I didn't really realize that those appetizing slices fo meat belonged to a dead cow/pig/lamb/turkey/chicken/fish.
And do you know why?
I finally found an answer in the first Youtube video that I watched (https://youtu.be/ao2GL3NAWQU)
That's al because of CARNISM "the invisible belief system which conditions us to eat certain animals"
Carnism uses defense mechanisms which hide the truth about animal agriculture so that rational, humane people participate in inhumane practices without fully realizing what they're doing.
First Carnism keeps its victims out of public consciousness:it ensures that the animals we eat have no names,no faces,no identities so that we brand them with hot irons or freeze off their skin.
If we would have given to these animals an identity as we did for Babe the little pig,for the chickens of chicken run,for Nemo the tiny and cute fish,we would have immediately threatened the very foundation of the lie upon which we desperately depend:farmed animals are objects, rather than beings.
"The myths of Carnism are supported by all major institutions which in turn transmit them to us [...] and when we are born into an institutionalized system such as Carnism,we internalize it"
In my opinion people don't realize what they have in their plate also because they don't even know what happens to these farmed animals:they know just that they die and then arrive at their supermarkets turned into tasty chicken fingers or fish sticks. People don't care of how the animals die because as they say to justify themselves "it's normal, natural and necessary to eat them" so knowing the process would be only worthless.
Well today I'm gonna briefly tell you what happens to cows, chickens and pigs because I found it really shocking and also because according to me everybody should know it.
COWS:
as all the other mammals cows produce milk exclusively to feed their babies.
In order to have a constant supply of cow's milk for human consumption we need a constant supply of pregnant cows.
In conclusion in the dairy industry cows are repeatedly raped.
To make sure there's a constant supply of milk for us,the baby cows must be taken away soon after birth.
If the calf is male he just waits, locked in a cage, unable to move, its death when he's only a few weeks old.
The mothers cry out for days the separation from their calves.
At the age of 4/5 years cows are sent for slaughter.
Approximately 10 to 70% of cows arrive at the slaughterhouse pregnant.
Often a cow can have infections and sores due to unsanitary living conditions.
Cows have their horns cut or burned off.
They are castrated without anesthetic.
CHICKENS:
hens lose vital nutrients every time they bodies form an egg.
They have days and days of persistent light followed by long periods of complete darkness.
They receive no food to force another egg cycle.
Male chicks can't lay eggs so when they're less then 72 hours they are suffocated in plastic bags or ground up alive.
Hens live in cramped battery cages unable to even extend their wings.
Chickens have their beaks cut or seared off
PIGS:
baby pigs have their teeth cut out, their tales cut off and their testicles ripped out all without anesthetic.
Pigs are introduced in CO2 chambers where they die burnt from the inside out (this method is seen as the MOST HUMANE one for slaughtering pigs).
....thank you guys..I know it's not easy to read this kind of brutalities..thank you once again.
I guess I know how you may feel now...confused..disappointed..angry..guilty...
I wrote this post not because I'm a vegetarian/vegan activist who wants to make you go vegetarian/vegan,if you are a meat eater nobody will criticize you or love you less,in life everyone must be free to do their own choices, but when I saw those two videos, and realized those things I said to myself that it was intolerable that most of people didn't know anything about this...that most of people lived for years and years in a world where violence was disguised as love.
We should all at least know the process to have the right to eat the product ;)
Zoe and me would love to hear your opinions about this, and if you are vegetarian or vegan already,or just if you are thinking about turning into it please share with us your stories!!
Peace and love,Marina :)
ps. I really suggest you to watch this speech even if it has Italian subtitles because that woman is awesome, she really inspired me to write here, and also because she will tell you about the benefits of a vegan diet, about the many problems caused by the supremacy of meat eaters and much more. Please, when you have time, have a look at this video https://youtu.be/fC8cEoc3k3E
